Versio Builder — User Guide

How to build and edit Versio DP templates

1. Overview

Versio Builder is a template editor for Versio DP, the data-collection app that runs on Haglöf's calipers. A template — saved as a .vbx file — describes exactly which questions the caliper asks the operator and in what order: a set of header variables collected once per list, a set of data variables collected once per measured item, and the program text shown in the caliper's fixed menus.

Versio Builder runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded anywhere — you build the template on screen and then download the finished .vbx file to load onto the caliper.

2. The toolbar

1
New Template — clears everything and starts a blank template. You'll be asked to confirm, since this cannot be undone.
2
Open template file — loads an existing .vbx file (one you saved earlier, or one created by the original Versio Builder) so you can continue editing it.
3
File name — the name the downloaded file will get. It always ends in .vbx; if you leave off the extension it's added automatically.
4
Download Template — saves the current template as a .vbx file to your computer, ready to transfer to the caliper.
If any variable has a validation issue when you download, you'll be asked to confirm before the file is saved anyway — see Validation and limits.

3. Header vs. data variables

Header variables are asked once per list — things that describe the whole job, such as a plot number, a customer name, or the date. Up to 20 header variables are allowed.

Data variables are asked once per measured item in the list — the diameter of each log, the species, a grade code, and so on. Up to 50 data variables are allowed.

Both groups are edited the same way and support the same variable types, with one difference: most data-variable types have an extra Repeat option (see below), because it's common to re-use the previous item's value when measuring a run of similar pieces.

4. Adding and editing a variable

1
Click + Add header variable or + Add data variable in the left-hand list.
2
Select it in the list to open the editor in the middle panel.
3
Fill in Name (internal identifier, up to 30 characters) and Caption (the text shown on the caliper's screen, up to 20 characters).
4
Choose a Type — the editor then shows only the fields relevant to that type (see the reference table below).
5
Use the ↑ / ↓ buttons in the list to reorder variables — this is the order they'll be asked on the caliper — and ✕ to delete one.

5. Variable type reference

Every variable has one of the following 15 types. The table lists the extra fields each type exposes in the editor, beyond the common Name/Caption/Type fields.

TypeUsed forExtra fields
NumericWhole numbers within a range, e.g. a count or a year.Min, Max, Step, Scale, Counter*
DecimalNumbers with decimals, e.g. a weight or a length.Min, Max, Decimals, Scale
TextFree-text entry, e.g. a customer name or ID.Max length, Scale, Bluetooth
ListA fixed set of choices, e.g. tree species or grade codes.List (semicolon-separated values, up to 50)
DateA calendar date.Scale, Date format
ScaleA value read from a connected scale.Divisor, GatorEyes
VertexA height/distance reading from a Vertex instrument.Divisor, Bluetooth
GPSA position reading from the caliper's GPS.—
PostexA position fix using the Postex method.Bluetooth, Display (X&Y / dist & angle / D1,D2&D3)
Digitech TapeA diameter or length reading from a Digitech measuring tape.Measure mode (Diameter/Length), Divisor
Yes/NoA simple boolean question.—
CalculationA value computed from other numeric variables. See section 6.Calculation, Parameters
DP DMEA reading from a DP DME instrument.—
DP DME PostexA DP DME reading combined with a Postex position fix.Display, Add diameter
DP GPSA DP GPS position reading.—

* Counter only applies to Numeric data variables — it increases the value by 1 for every new item automatically, instead of asking the operator.

Common options explained

  • Scale — lets the operator use a connected scale to input the number or text instead of typing it.
  • Bluetooth — reads the value from an external Bluetooth device rather than manual entry.
  • Repeat — (data variables only) automatically repeats the previous item's value, useful for runs of similar pieces.
  • GatorEyes — adds 2.54 cm (1 inch) to the measured value, for GatorEyes-style diameter tools.
  • Divisor — divides the raw instrument reading by this number, e.g. to convert units.

6. Calculation variables

A Calculation variable computes a value from other variables in the same group (header or data) instead of asking the operator directly.

  • Only numeric-type variables can be picked as parameters: Numeric, Decimal, Scale, Vertex, Digitech Tape, and DP DME. Text, List, Date, GPS, Postex, Yes/No and the other calculation-related types can't be used, since they have no numeric value to compute with.
  • At least two parameters must be selected — a calculation with zero or one parameter can't actually be computed on the caliper, and is flagged as a validation issue.
  • If you later change a parameter variable's type to a non-numeric one, it's automatically removed from any calculation that referenced it.
Currently the only available calculation is Arithmetic mean — the average of the selected parameters.

7. Program text (menu captions)

The Program text list on the bottom-left is fixed — it's the caliper app's built-in system menu (Measure, Send data, Settings, error messages, Yes/No, and so on). You cannot add, remove, or rename these entries.

What you can do is translate each one: edit the Caption field next to an entry to change the text shown on screen for that menu item, in any language you like. The internal name stays the same so the caliper still recognises which menu item it is.

8. Validation and limits

Any variable with an outstanding issue shows a small red dot in the list and the details in the editor panel. You can still download the file with issues present, but you'll be asked to confirm first.

9. The template preview

The right-hand panel shows a live, read-only preview of the .vbx file as you build it — useful for double-checking the exact values before downloading, or for support purposes if something doesn't behave as expected on the caliper.

10. Tips and troubleshooting

  • Reordering matters — variables are asked on the caliper in the order they appear in the list, top to bottom.
  • Keep captions short — the caliper's screen is small; captions over 20 characters are truncated when the file is saved.
  • Editing an existing template — use Open template file, make your changes, and download again with the same or a new file name.
  • Old files with a decimal comma (e.g. Max="500,0") are read correctly — Versio Builder automatically converts locale-formatted numbers on import.
